A message from SOUTHERN DOOR COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear Families and Staff:

A
s shared in
a
 press release
on an earlier Blackboard Connect email
, the Southern Door School Board voted to present a one-year, non-recurring referendum to the community authorizing the district budget to exceed its revenue limit by $390,000 for the 2015-2016 year
on the November 4, 2014 election ballot.

The Board recognizes that the Southern Door community bears a significant burden in supporting our schools, and is extremely grateful for the community’s support. In order to continue to meet the high academic standards for which Southern Door Schools  are known, the Board is asking for this additional funding which will cover the projected budget shortfall for next year, covering ongoing costs to maintain current educational programming.

 The impact of this
referendum on the local taxpayer
 would be $37 on a $100,000 home.

The community has asked what is at stake if the referendum fails.  On Monday
night, September 22, 2014 at its regular meeting, the Board of Education will be asked to approve the budget actions that will be considered should a referendum not pass.  The agenda for Monday night’s meeting is attached as well as the resolution itself.

Southern Door residents are encouraged to make an informed vote come November 4, 2014.  Be watching for materials to be sent out by the end of next week with basic facts about the referendum and a page on the website to be dedicated to more information.  Informational sessions will be offered in October here at school and throughout the community, giving voters the opportunity to understand the reasons for decreased state funding, and the need for additional local revenue in order to maintain current programming.
